The Nether Network is a network of tunnels and nether portals at low y co-ordinates in the nether, providing fast transit between places without the expense and permanence of a teleport. At the centre of the nether, as a counterpart of Zero Zero and Spawn Island, is the Nether Hub. There are many ways to access the Nether Network, as almost every base and project has a connected portal.
The network's skeleton is eight "main roads" leading out from the Nether Hub at 0, 0 co-ordinates like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. There is one each for North, South, East and West, plus diagonal paths for North-east, South-east, South-west and North-west.
Each road is colour-coded at its archway at the Hub and with navigation markers along the main road itself. The colours chosen are standard rainbow colours plus grey, starting at North, for easy memorising:
- North = red
- North-east = orange
- East = yellow
- South-east = green
- South = blue
- South-west = indigo
- West = violet
- North-west = grey
Players tend to connect their builds to the network by building a nether portal at the same y-level as the Hub and connecting it to the nearest main road. Directions to builds can be added to the coloured navigation posts in the Nether Hub itself.
The Nether Hub and the entire network are paved with slabs to prevent mob spawns. When these paths transition to smaller and unpaved paths they are fenced and sealed with doors to keep zombie pigmen off the busier roads.
The Hub and all the main roads are tall enough to accommodate travel by horse.
The Nether Network started when fallerOfFalls dug a tunnel through the nether between their base and spawn, so that they didn't have to go by boat every time. That tunnel is now called Diagon Alley. Tunnels were then dug off Diagon Alley to others' bases. and well-used tunnels were expanded to be large enough for horses. Later, after the creation of the Nether Hub, many of the tunnels were paved with slabs to prevent Zombie Pigmen and other mobs from spawning.
